In early February, 2008, I decided to take a ride through the highlands that surround my
Addison Township home. The trail ride is a pleasant two-track ride that cuts through old
logging trails surrounded by tall pines. The ride was quite pleasant until I traversed down
a ridge into the valley below. Just a week prior to the trail ride, the highlands received
approximately 30 inches of snow. Deep snow, combined with a freezing rainstorm a
few days prior to the ride, was a recipe for severe driving conditions. I drove out that
Saturday afternoon in my Jeep looking for a quick ride in the tranquil woods. The ride
went well through the tree lined two-track. The tall pines provided an umbrella to the
freezing rain that covered the area three nights earlier. However, when I reached the
valley, trouble set in. Snow drifted through the valley. Ice from the freezing rain
collected in the valley floor, creating a frozen pond. My Jeep could not gain
traction nor could it push its way through the deep snow. The only way out of this ice
box was to winch it. So, over the next few hours I moved my Jeep 60 feet at a time, from
tree-to-tree, for over one-quarter of a mile. The snow was so deep that it nearly reached the top of my 33" tires. Would I do this again . . . YES! Having a Warn on the front of my Jeep guarantees that I will get out of any situation I put myself (or my Jeep) in to.
