August 2007 my son was competing in an of road race in the Welsh mountains.
While walking to a vantage point to view him on stage all of a sudden one of the off road
racers misread the track and drove straight over the edge of a 125 foot valley!! after a
bit of fire and a few shaken passengers we were asked to recover the vehicle. It was in
a bog, no drive with a dead weight of around 1.4 tons and around 160ft from the
closest we could get. We started to unspool our trusty Warn 9000 and just managed to
connect to the vehicle with around 5 rotations left on the drum. Up she come, first thru
the bog and then over the rocks which gave us a near vertical pull at one point, but the
winch never faltered, it just kept on pulling. Until we got to around half way up the hill,
where our position and the steepness of the valley side meant we were now increasing
our load because we were trying to pull the vehicle into the bank! No problem, secure the
vehicle and re-rig with a double line pull, to the sound of claps and cheers the
stricken vehicle was soon on level ground and we were ready for the next job!
